Set during the American Civil War, the story follows Lieutenant John Dunbar, who, after being wounded in battle, requests a transfer to a remote post on the Western frontier. There, he finds himself alone after the suicide of his commander and the death of his companion in an encounter with Native Americans. As he navigates the challenges of survival in the harsh environment, Dunbar gradually forms friendships with the local Sioux tribe, leading to a profound transformation in his understanding of life and culture.
