After an unknown virus wipes out half of the world's population and turns the rest into vampires, Robert Neville, the last human survivor with immunity, struggles to survive in the desolate New York City. By night, he defends himself against vampire attacks, while by day, he searches for a cure and seeks to understand the causes of the epidemic. The complexity of his existence is heightened by loneliness and the constant threat from the mutated beings.
