Set in 1914, the story follows the Duke of Oxford, who, having lost his beloved wife, is determined to protect his only son, Conrad. Eager to serve the crown, Conrad persuades his father to accompany him to Sarajevo, where they witness the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This event triggers World War I. After receiving a letter from a spy at the court of Tsar Nicholas II, the Dukes, along with loyal allies, travel to Russia to eliminate Rasputin, who has a strong influence over the monarch and is advising against entering the war.
