Following the conquest of the Inca Empire by the Spanish, a legend arose about the fabulously wealthy land of El Dorado, hidden in the swamps of the Amazon basin. A Spanish expedition led by Aguirre embarks on a perilous journey down the Amazon River in search of this mythical land. As great difficulties arise, the crew members begin to question whether their quest will lead them to prosperity or to death.
