A father lives with his six children in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. He tries to adapt to life after the death of his wife. The family leads an unusual lifestyle. The children can catch and dress deer, navigate by stars, and treat wounds. They do not attend regular school but know about important social issues. Their utopia collapses when they go to their mother's funeral and meet her parents, ordinary Americans.
