After a difficult life situation, Beth arrives in Los Angeles to visit her older sister Ellie. It soon becomes clear that Ellie has been left alone with three children after her husband departed, and their apartment complex is set to be demolished. In an effort to talk privately, Ellie sends the kids out for pizza. On their way back, they experience an earthquake, leading to a sinkhole where the eldest, Danny, discovers an ancient book and recordings. Curiosity leads him to unleash malevolent forces that possess his mother and threaten to drag everyone, especially the children, into hell.
