The story revolves around a doctor who decides to change her life and leaves her lakeside home in Illinois. She takes a job in a Chicago hospital and leaves a letter in the mailbox for the new resident. The new occupant, architect Alex, finds the letter and begins a correspondence with her. Both characters face a time anomaly: Alex lives in 2004, while she lives in 2006. Their interactions and attempts to understand the situation form the core of the narrative.
